Message from Head of Department

The Department of Clinical Studies being one  of the five departments  in the Faculty of Veterinary, has highly trained and experienced academic  members of staff teaching Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Bsc in Wildlife Management and Conservation, MSc in  Theriogenology,  Msc  in Wildlife Health and Management, Master of Veterinary Medicine ,  Master of Veterinary Surgery and PhD in Clinical Studies. The three discipline- based sections are Medicine, Surgery and Theriogenology. The Department also offers clinical services that include out-patient clinical services, ambulatory, herd health, fertility clinics, animal clinics and community outreach activities within Nairobi and other counties.  In-patient service,  pharmacy, boarding kennels , large animal (cattle, horses, pigs, sheep and goats) stalls  supported by laboratory(hematology, clinical chemistry and microbiology) diagnostic services are sources of income to the department. Conventional X-ray machine, digital X-ray machine and ultrasound machine are used for diagnostic imaging for practitioners at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and private clinics. A well equipped surgical theatre with modern digital video camera installed to facilitate display of surgical procedures is used for teaching purposes.  Anaesthesia machine with Isoflurane Vaporizer complements injectable general anaesthesial protocols. The large Animal Clinic has spacious theatres for Surgery, Medicine and Theriogenology. The embryo production laboratory is nearly to be completed and the department will be able to supply embryos to famers and improve genetics of cattle in our country. The department collaborates with national institutions such as the Kenya Veterinary Association, Kenya Veterinary Board, Department of Veterinary Services, Kenya Wildlife Service and Animal Industry stakeholders.  International collaboration involves partnership such as Donkey Sanctuary (UK), World Society of Protection of Animals (WSPA) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The country coordination office for One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) is hosted in the department.
